Media

In todays society, we are drowned with media everywhere we go.  According to the Boss book, Americans spend an average of 9 hours a day watching television, going on the internet, talking or texting on the phone, or using some other form of media.  Mass media is forms of communication that are designed to reach and influence very large audiences.  Some examples are television with networks like ESPN, CNN, MSNBC, and many other forms of news medias.  Lots of news medias now a days are skewed towards the networks beliefs, some being republican or democratic or having a mixture of both.  Niche media is forms of communication geared to a narrowly defined audience.   Some types of niche media would be like ESPN were they cater to sports fans or the home network where they cater to housewives.  Mass media since the middle of the 19th century has changed the way we view and perceive things.  Personally, I am a fan of todays mass media and the way that we find information.  Even though some networks are skewed away from all the facts, I don't know what I would do know a days without the many types of media sources feeding us information.

  1. SJB77,
I agree with you that in todays society we are drowned in media constantly. With that I think that most people do spend at least 9 hours a day using some sort of technology accessing various forms of media. Our society has been so consumed with computers, television, texting in order to have access to forms of social networking. I also agree that various networks use their channels or sites to spread their beliefs on to others who watch/access them. I like how you elaborate on what Niche Media is because before this chapter I never knew what it was and now I have a relevant example.

  2. Hello SJB77,
The topic of media is very interesting. You make a great point when you express how reliant we have become on the media for various information. The fact that over 30% of our day is spent dealing or watching forms of media is interesting. What if half of this time was spent studying or focusing on other future goals we hope to obtain. It would be hard for me not be believe that our world would be a better place if this took place. In this class online, we are required to view various forms of media daily in order to finish and view assignments. Media is very powerful and affects the economy of our world. Overall, I love that you used this topic and your thoughts towards the power we know as the media.
    Great Job,

  3. I agree that everyone is on the media/technology all the time, but reading and doing other stuff is fine online. But a lot of people spend way to much time doing other stuff. I like how you used the example of niche media to express and make your position stronger. Thank you for your time!
